About
Welcome to Schmidt’s Sausage Haus Restaurant, a gastronomic gem nestled in the historic German Village of Columbus, Ohio. This charming eatery brings the heart of Germany right to your plate, offering a menu brimming with traditional fare that celebrates the rich culinary heritage of German cuisine. Located at 240 E Kossuth St, Columbus, OH 43206, Schmidt’s invites you to indulge in a hearty selection of homemade sausages, rich potato salads, and delightful desserts that will transport your taste buds across the Atlantic.
The star of the show is undoubtedly the Old World Sausage Sampler Platter, a delightful medley offering four of the J. Fred Schmidt Packing Company's famed sausages. Each bite is reminiscent of authentic German flavors, served with accompaniments like hot kraut and chunky apple sauce that perfectly complement the richness of the sausages. For those seeking a standout dish, the Bahama Mama Platter beckons—this hickory-smoked sausage, spiced with a secret seasoning, promises a unique twist that fans rave about.
The restaurant also prides itself on its tempting starters. The Famous Pretzel Nuggets are a must-try; soft and warm, they pair perfectly with a sweet and tangy mustard sauce, and adding beer cheese takes this dish to another level. As one reviewer aptly put it, these pretzel bites are “amazing” when enjoyed with their rich beer cheese dip.
But don't stop at the savory; dessert enthusiasts will want to save room for the jumbo cream puffs and cherry cheese tarts. Customers rave about these sweet ending notes, making them a crucial part of the dining experience at Schmidt’s.
Moreover, the atmosphere at Schmidt’s is as inviting as the food. With an authentic German ambiance and attentive service, diners are treated to more than just a meal—they enjoy a cultural experience steeped in history and hospitality. One guest remarked on the friendly and efficient staff, underscoring how they enhance the overall experience.

“ Great German eatery in historic German Village offering great German beers, for starters get the pretzel nuggets with their delicious beer cheese dip, I also recommend trying the popular Bahama Mama “The original”, a hickory-smoked sausage spiced with their secret seasoning, comes with their delicious potato salad. Last but not least dessert is always a must! I recommend trying their jumbo cream puffs and cherry cheese tarts. I really recommend this restaurant, very friendly and attentive service and the historic German atmosphere will make you feel like you’re in a different country. I give it a 5 experience. ”
“ 11k reviews and 4.7 on Google will definitely grab your attention! Landed at the tail end of lunch in Columbus and decided to check this place out in the heart of German Village...it did not disappoint! They were still pretty busy but I was able to get seated immediately...walking past the sausage and dessert coolers I could tell just by the looks of things this was going to be delicious! The host greeted me with a smile and sat me just as my server came up with a genuinely bubbly attitude which permeated throughout my entire meal from taking my drink order to helping me pick out a shirt for Neeley to packing up my to go dessert...pretzel bites (amazing with some of the best beer cheese ever), bratwurst (delicious), Bahama Mama Reuben (think spicy bologna Reuben...sooooooooo good)...the mustard and horseradish on the table was a wonderful touch! Stopped across the street to their sister fudge haus...if you find yourself in Columbus, don’t miss out on this gem of a place! ”
“ Schmidt's is a taste of Germany, which means plenty of beer and sausage. I can't have those things but I figured it was worth trying anyway and honestly it was pretty good. The service is especially exceptional, with a polite wait staff who is dedicated to customer satisfaction. ”
“ Wonderful restaurant. It was really busy but the staff are very efficient. I was sat quickly, ordered and food served fairly fast. I ordered the traditional weiner schnitzel with red cabbage and german potato salad. I got a cream puff to go. It was all delicious. ”
“ First time I was here, I stopped by just for the cream puffs after hearing that they were a must. They are pretty big. Second time, also stopped by for the cream puffs but casually ended up in line for the restaurant. We were in line 5 minutes to it opening in the morning and decided to dine in. They had the buffet option for 25 but looked mid. Ordered regular menus instead. The sides are swappable so if you dont like the preselected, feel free to swap with another. Despite them being at full seating capacity at 1130am, the service was quick and food was served promptly. ”
“ A long time ago, I saw this place on one of the TV food channels and they have buffet type that you can try all kinds of sausages and deserts. When we got here, we found out the buffet is no longer since the covid. We arrived here around 2pm on a Thursday. The parking lot is pretty full. I did not wait to be seated. I ordered sampler plate which has 4 different types of sausages. My husband ordered Weiner schnitzel. Both were very good and tasty. We also like the sides. For dessert, we had their famous vanilla and chocolate cream puffs. They are all very satisfying. The waitress was very helpful and friendly. for sure we will return when in Columbus. ”
“ Arrived around 10 min prior to opening on a Saturday; there were probably already 20 people in line. Within minutes the place was packed. Despite being busy the service was quick and the food was brought out shortly after. Tried both the hunter schnitzel and wiener schnitzel. Both were very good and the “Bahama Mama” sausage was great. For dessert I tried the original cream puff and all I can say is you better have plenty of room or plan to share it. Definitely plan on coming back! ”
“ There's no doubt that the Roasted Bavarian Schmidt’s Sausage Haus is probably the best Germany restaurant I’ve ever been to in the U.S., all the Germany cuisines are so descent and authentic. This place has the most classic Pork Shank around this area, and the Old World Sausage Platter as well as Vanilla Cream Puff also impress me a lot, not to mention the live band and lively atmosphere. I spent 4 hours driving back and forth and I still think it’s completely worthy, I’m definitely willing to come back here again. ”
